Jonathan Mills, President
Clients tell us that choosing a contractor is an activity that lies outside their "comfort zone". They feel weak and at a disadvantage in such discussions because they know little about the building trades. They find it difficult to obtain information about the customary and usual business practices associated with the building and remodeling industry. When contractors assume an authoritative, overbearing posture, the
clients' anxieties are increased.
Most contractors utilize one of three or four basic business models. Some work exclusively with architects, bidding competitively to obtain work. Others refuse to bid competitively. Instead, they work exclusively with clients who are open to "negotiated bid" arrangements. Still others embrace the design-build model. Over the past 20 years, it has emerged as a popular option among homeowners and contractors.
Every homeowner brings different needs, experiences and expectations to the process of choosing a contractor. We are not interested in finding the one right way to do business with our clients. In fact, we reject that idea that there is but one way to approach a remodeling or building project. Consequently, we do our best to identify a range of alternatives from which the homeowner can choose. We don't think it makes sense to impose unnecessary limitations on our clients.
Every Mills Builders project begins with a conversation. We will ask questions of you concerning your timetable, the status of design work performed - if any - and your budget. We do not intend our questions to be intrusive. Our objective is simply to ascertain if we are in a position to assist you - every question we pose serves this goal. When we have conducted a thorough evaluation of your project, we will discuss our findings with you. When we would benefit from working together, we will outline in detail the arrangements we feel are most advantageous.
At this stage, you should be equipped with the information and range of choices you need to take the next step choosing your contractor. Your decision should follow a suitable period of reflection and discernment. During this time, we are at your service to answer questions and provide such additional information as we can.
If you have a project in mind, by all means - let us hear from you! We take pleasure in meeting people and working with them to meet their objectives. We look forward to your call.
